New Path Puts On Second Forum

If you missed the Race and Media Forum hosted by New Path and the Memphis Urban League you missed a lively and informative exchange. This was their second forum and what I thought would be impossible even better than their first.

Even though some audience members had to stand outside the meeting hall due to an overflow of attendees the panelists did not disappoint. At times cordiality was thrown out when panelists openly and passionately disagreed on the power, scope and mission of the media when it comes to dealing with race. Bruce VanWyngarden, Memphis Flyer Editor was quick to point out his disagreement with those who see race in everything. While Chris Peck, Editor, Commercial Appeal felt much of what we see as racial discord is in truth more of a social class issue between the haves and have nots. Karanja Ajanaku, Executive Editor, Tri-State Defender stated his opinion on the enormous power the press has in shaping or distorting public views on race.

The audience members were allowed to ask questions and some came with clear opinions. Many of the comments seemed to express the concern that Memphians like to talk about racial disconnect but they show little interest in doing anything to change the situation.

New Path has hit a cord with these forums and with several more coming soon Memphians truly have a reason to get out.

Would have loved to ask the guy from the Commercial Appeal why they are so negative about Mayor Herenton.

I went, it was at the main library, but felt the panel members were holding back. The problem with getting people who are in the media business of selecting the politically correct words is that they will do just that when asked to speak on the issues. Still it was enjoyable and the turn out was very good also.

HOW CAN A RACIST MEDIA TALK ABOUT RACISM? IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. SINCE THE WEALTH IS IN THE HANDS OF WHITES THE MEDIA WILL CATHER TO THEM.

You have got to be kidding!!! This Mayor has been totally anti-media. He only appears when there is good news. I think the press has been too kind.
