Del Gill's Moment

Love him or hate him, you have to admit Del Gill gets your attention. Like a bull dog, when Del latches on to an issue he won't let go. Be it the single Democratic column or a People's Conference he's in it to win. The effort was to have the Shelby County Democratic Party hold a Mayoral Conference that would select one Democratic candidate for Memphis mayor out of the ever growing number of hopefuls.

From its conception the idea of the Party being involved in hosting an effort to choose the next mayor seemed doubtful at best. The cost would have been prohibitive, we didn't have a team ready to move, and we only had a couple of weeks. Even though the architect of this conference agreed to change from finding a single candidate to whittling the number of mayoral hopefuls down to four it still was a long shot.

But I welcomed the idea from Del, at least he was offering suggestions. If this Party is going to go forward we will need to be creative. Del also invited former Mayor Herenton to speak. Now this is the third time Herenton has come to a recent SCDP event, uh Congressman Cohen it might be a good idea to drop by. There is an election coming up.

Last night was an example of what SCDP can be if everyone works together. The evening showed that we Democrats can work together. If we are respectful of each other and stay focused on the prize there is nothing we can't get done.

Congressman Cohen supports the Party. Herenton openly supports Republicans. Is Herenton a "bonafide" Dem?

Reginald you need to point out in the end the Convention was voted down like eight to one. This would have destroyed the party. We need to support ALL Dems. Simple as that.

Democratic Guardian @ 10:00am:

Willie Herenton is a Real Democrat!

BTW, the Convention plus a Forum was voted down with only 31 yes votes out 50 committeemen present who could have voted for it!

By any math that's not 8:1.

BTW, did you ever see the promotional piece put out by Lamar Alexander in last Nov 08 General ELECTION that featured the pictures of three Democrats with a caption reading... "This is what DEMOCRATS are saying about LAMAR ALEXANDER!"

The three DEMOCRATS were... STEVE COHEN, AC WHARTON and WILLIE HERENTON! Neither of them ever refuted the piece! What say you now? For your memory Lamar is the Republican! Don't make me forward a copy to Reginald!

Also what about that REPUBLICAN... MIKE McCusker that appeared before you for the second month running last night, again annoucing he intends to seek your Democratic nomination for Criminal Court Clerk? Mike voted the REPUBLICAN Primary in Feb 2008... this is the same primary season where the Democrat's winner was Obama!!!

Lastly, the greatest threat to DESTROYING this Party is being watered down by weak kneed Democrats like you and MIKE... go check his flip flopping voting record!

Reg, you're being to nice to Del. It not like people just picked him out of the blue to dislike him. Del has been a torn in SCDP for years.

What you saw the other night is not Del Gill. That was a guy who wanted something and was willing to "play" nice to get it. Well he didn't and you saw as soon as it was clear he wasn't going to win he went back to his old self.

While another member had the floor Del was having a loud sidebar conversation. When someone shushed him he flew off the handle.

By the next meeting you'll see. The old Del will be back:
1. Jumping up 15 times to make some meaningless correction.
2. Having loud sidebar conversations.
3. Disrespecting the Steering Committee members.
4. Fighting with other EC members.

Don't get me wrong. Many people wish he would act better. If he did maybe more people would support him, but as long as he acts up no one wants to be connected to him.

Del -

You are always telling everyone how you actively try to recruit Mark Luttrel to the Domocratic Party.

If somehow you convinced him to switch would you then turn on him and complain about his voting in Republican primaries?

My Democratic Party welcomes all - blacks, whites, hispanics, suburbanites and even reformed Republicans.

Most Democrats feel that way. I go back to something said about you years ago - you are a Delocrat, not to be confused with Democrat.

And as for the vote - compare the no's to the yes's and it is about 6 to 1 against. Most of the abstentions were made so you would not be totally embarassed.

Anonymous said...

I had heard Del was going to bring a guest but wasn't he bringing the guest (Herenton) to support his people convention? Herenton said nothing about that. If he had supported the convention that might have given Del more votes.

Del enjoys attention any way he can get it. His writing style is distinctive, therefore it is easy to recognize his tiresome posts.

He really does not volunteer on projects, does not do much to support the party financially and is more than deliberately disruptive at meetings. He is not a productive member of the Executive Committee.

Willie was at the meeting to campaign for himself and was not there in support of Gill.

You are a little mis-guided to believe "Willie was (only) at the meeting to campaign for himself and was not there in support of Gill."

Willie... was at the meeting because the "lower case one" called Willie and recommended he attend since he has intentions of obtaining a Petition that the Party owns. It's a humbling appearance and a deferential acknowledgment of moving from the non-partisan world of city government politics to the partisan world of federal politics.

Regarding whether Willie would have endorsed the "lower case one's" idea of a "Convention plus a Forum," keep on wondering and stay tuned! Maybe the "lower case one" didn't want him to endorse and therefore didn't ask him to endorse?

So let me get this straight - Del forced ex-Mayor Herenton to come before the Executive Committee and grovel in order to curry favor so he can run as a Democrat?

I must have missed that part of the meeting.

"I must have missed that part of the meeting."

I must have missed it too! It's all in Del's mind.

Reginald you said love him or hate him. Put me on the hate list. People call him a Delocrate because Del only thinks about Del. He doesn't care about the Shelby County Democratic Party or Democrats or people in general. Del only cares about Del. The only reason he wanted the convention was to promote himself. When Barbara corrected Del by telling him our last convention cost far more than what he was suggesting he said I'll pay the difference. Then Lynn asked if he would donate that money to the Party if the convention idea was voted down? Del quickly said NO! He has never financially supported this Party. You and Del are like night and day. You spend your life helping others and he spends his life taking advantage of others. Please go on to a new post I'm sick of looking at Del's face.

Even Republican Senator Lamar Alexander called the three Democrats (Steve Cohen, AC Wharton amd Willie Herenton) who were featured on his promotional flyer during last November’s election... Democrats! (and FYI, Willie has no R's in his voting record.)

So are you STUPID enough to call Willie a Republican without calling COHEN and WHARTON Republicans too??? Again FYI, Wharton openly supported Republican Bill Gibbons in his 2006 re-election as DA with another Democrat running for DA and as best as I can recall gave him a contribution!

Why don’t go check your fellow source (Lynn) and ask if the “lower case one” is and has always been financial? Are your upset that the “lower case one” was willing to fund a $1600 event? Or are you upset because the “tail” of this Democratic “donkey” can’t control the “wagging” of the “donkey?”

Time will eventually validate the “lower case one”… so often it’s the messenger and not the message when the audience is full of haters. The “lower case one” appreciates this axiom and can wait… for the audience to change! After all… WINNING changes minds or what you are willing to openly say!!!

If you gave an IQ test to all Democrats in Shelby county, Del might come out on top or at least very high. However, his ideas personify the worst in Memphis politics.

He is all about race. As many whites have been motivated by keeping blacks out of power in the past, Del and other racist blacks have been motivated by shoving whites away from the table and does it by quoting phony statistics.

He succeeded (after many years) in expanding the number of ExCom members to a ridiculous number to add more African American members, he consistently supports black candidates who are more divisive, including the one he supports for Mayor this year, and he searches for reasons to accuse white Democrats of not being sufficiently loyal.

The problems that Del causes far outweigh the positives he brings in knowledge and experience. If Del were to leave Shelby County politics today, the Democratic Party would be better off.

It all about hate. SCDP has some very racist blacks who attack any other black that tries to build bridges.

That sick Thaddeus Matthews and others like him are the ones really ripping this city apart.

That is why Jay Bailey didn't get my support. The people around him are just mean. The same people that are around Charles Carpenter and even Norma Lester.

If these people win office this city will go from bad to worse.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////

Can you explain this?

There were 26 Non-Blacks (more commonly referred to as WHITE PEOPLE) elected to the 83 member Democratic Executive Committee this past Spring... So how did ALL twenty-six (26) of them manage to cast their votes for VAN TURNER without having held a convention or planning meeting??? Fact is ALL of them don’t KNOW each other!!! So, is there some code word, hand sign or blink of the eye that BLACKS need to learn??? Do “you people” really think that because Van wears a BOW TIE that he is a Myron Lowery type of Black? Don’t be fooled!!!

OR is it possible… this is the last vestiges of America's WHITE RACISM still alive and well in the Shelby County Democratic Party??? Where 28% of the Executive Committee believes it has a mandate to BLOCK VOTE and dictate outcomes for the entire Party? And label BLACKS who don’t say “Simon sez… MAY I… first” as Black Racists???

Speaking of WHITE BLOCK VOTING… this is the same tactic that allowed Steve Cohen to “steal” a WIN in 2006, and it seems to be the same plan to “steal” the MEMPHIS MAYOR’S race this year!

Keep on tripping… Inquiring minds want to know!

There you go again Del. Blacks had block voting for years in Democratic primaries AND in nonpartisan city races and I didn't blame them a bit. When a white candidate catered to rightwing and elitist whites by using coded but divisive language, they should have voted against those candidates. By the same token, whites will do the same thing whether it be Jay Bailey, Nikki Tinker, WW Herenton, or your boy, Charles Carpenter. Now ain't that weird that we all listen and we all are basically the same that way?

Now when you yell and scream and threaten us Del, and then start making racial insinuations if we don't go your way, then what else can we conclude except you have some problems with us "non whites?"

This white man will tell you a secret. Steve Cohen isn't universally loved in the white community. I did not vote for him in '06 but any African American primary opponent will have to work to get white support and keep it. Nikki wasn't up to it and WWH lost it several years ago. If you regard a black candidate as bowing and scraping when he or she goes after white votes, shows concern for the entire community, and uses unifying language, then that's your opinion.

The more that kind of thinking dies out on all sides, then the better this City will be. I don't expect to change your mind Del, you seem to be terminally infected but hopefully others will read and give it some thought.

Anonymous said...

So now we are back to the Van Turner election - it always cones back to that.

Does it even enter your mind that the electors independently assessed both candidates and reached a conclusion based on qualifications and vision for the party.

That same thing took place in the Tinker Cohen race.

Let's go back to the 2006 Dem primary. The reason Steve Cohen won was becasue there were 4 or 5 good African American candidates and one good white candidate.

That same scenario is not present in this year's mayoral race.. There are only 3 legitimate candidates - Wharton, Lowery, & Chumney. No one else is going to get more than a thousand or so votes.

Whites are not banding together to secretly elect Chumney. The winner will be Wharton because people are tired of drama in the mayor's office. Wharton is the only person who does bring a history of drama to the race.

Anonymous said...

Yea there was a "white code" when they voted for Van Turner. It's called "qualified."

Jay Bailey was surronded by people "Del and others" who are nothing but race baiter.

When blacks that don't want to play that game steer clear of jokers like you. You lable them Uncle Tom's.

)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Yeah... We African Americans are very familiar with the White Folks' code word Q-U-A-L-I-F-I-E-D... It was the inspiration for the Title VII of the historic 1964 Civil Rights Act that Martin Luther King fought for and the reason why WE now have another famous phrase name to remember... Equal Employment Opportunity Commission!!!

We recall quite well your double standard that the word QUALIFIED invokes in Black history. And it is precisely the point of why 26 white people who could not have known that they’d become a group of 26, and still don’t know all know each other, could have miraculously agreed that not one of them could find something sociably redeeming enough about Jay Bailey for at least ONE of the gang of 26 to have voted for him as CHAIRMAN of the PARTY this past spring!

Just in case you think there something skewed about this observation… just watch future votes. And BTW… not one WHITE voted to have the CONVENTION either!!! Even the conservative Commercial Appeal’s Editorial Board wishes the Memphis City Charter permitted partisan elections and thus PRIMARIES! Duhhhhh… a CONVENTION is nothing but the PARTIES internal method for deriving PRIMARY candidates!

Question… If the “lower case one” was sent by Jesus to offer salvation to the unsaved and the PARTY’s group of 26 was in the “unsaved”… do you think the “lower case one” would receive any “VOTES?” (Hell naw!)

As shown above, Del will be Del but I have noticed how he makes others react to him. When the other writer used the word "qualified," it made me remember that many white office holders were not qualified either, those who were strongly supported by whites. Examples are former County Mayor Jim Rout, Wyeth Chandler, Ray Blanton, and many others whom we are paying for now. By his racially oriented and caustic rhetoric, Del often skews our judgment and makes us react against him, just to piss him off.

I believe that our challenge is to ignore his style and try to do things positive for the Democratic Party, regardless of whether Del supports it or not.

So Herenton came before the Executive Committee last week and said how happy he was to be a private citizen, etc, etc.

Less than a week later he pulls a petition to rerun for mayor, but he is still running for Congress?

We are always being told we, the SCDP, own our Democratic ballot and we should take steps to protect it and our name.

I think we need to withhold the privilege of Herneton's running for Congress in the Democratic primary becasue it is obvious he has no respect for our Party.

Oh yeah, he may also be nuts.

WWH may not really be a supporter of SCDP,has he contributed anything to the party?

Naw, this would be a GOOD TIME for you to reconcile that MISSED opportunity the PARTY missed last Thursday when it chose to overwhelmingly NOT interfere in a NON-PARTISAN RACE. Since you likely supported those who voted to not interfere… be reminded the CITY MAYOR‘s race is a NONE of your concern!!! Stop WITCHING!!!

Herenton has NOT violated one principle or rule of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY by picking up a Petition for MAYOR… maybe he sees this race as being filled with a bunch of cartoon characters and he’s decided he’s going to give “GOOFY” a run for his/her MONEY – if GOOFY has any money!!!

This would be a GOOD TIME to reconsider that vote! Choose wisely, its not too late!!!

The only thing WWH has contributed is two chairpersons who were controlled by his allies, namely Gale Carson and Matt Kuhn. The Party worsended during their times as chair.

If you were the smart man that most people consider you as, you would find someone else to sponsor your proposals and sit back and shut up but NOOOOOOOO! That is too much like CIVIL. It feeds your needs to get up and act a fool. I have never met a person that required as much attention as you do. And the point of it is that it doesn't seem to matter to you whether it is positive or negative attention. I can accept that from my three year old but it's kind of tough coping with a 60 year old that behaves the same childish way.
