A Good Way To Start A New Year

Every year I'm convinced it is impossible for Councilman Myron Lowery's New Year's Prayer Breakfast to get any better and every time I'm proven wrong. This year was no exception. With standing room only the ballroom was packed with hundreds of Memphians who had gathered to ring in 2009 with blessings and songs. No one was disappointed.

Keynote speaker, Congressman Steve Cohen was at his best. With acknowledgment of a difficult 2008, he appropriately made note that this was the combination of eight years of a failed Bush Administration. With promise of brighter times Cohen emphasis the importance of the democratically controlled House and Senate working side-by-side with President Obama. With a sense of zeal and compassion the Congressman stated, “I know what my district needs.” He committed to working to improve education, highway infrastructure, and by no later than 2017 a National Health Care System for the country.

In a moment of candor Councilman Lowery let it be known what his focus will be in 2009, “The Council has lacked the courage to make the hard decisions on consolidation,” he said. He and Shelby County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Deidre Malone are heading a newly formed joint commission on consolidation. Yours truly has been asked to sit on this commission and I look forward to helping to address an issue that can no longer be ignored.

Myron Lowery has become a respected statesman for this City. He exemplifies the grace, dignity and commitment that is respected by all. The New Year’s Prayer Breakfast is a reflection of what happens when we have good leadership.

Happy New Year!

Lowery is a good man. The breakfast is to expensive for me. They need to lower the price.

Memphis need a lot of praying. As long as people keep putting in Herenton and others like him we ain't going to see any difference.

COUNSELMAN LOWERY IS THE ONLY CITY COUNSELMAN THAT COMES TO OUR NEIGHBORHOOD MEETINGS. WE HAVE NEVER SEEN FULLILOVE. THESE PEOPLE NEED TO FOLLOW COUNSELMAN LOWERY EXAMPLE.

Councilman is the correct spelling. The tickets are too high for my budget. Those groups in Memphis who benefit must be very appreciative.

For those who are complaining about ticket prices don't forget it's a fund raiser. After you pay for renting the site, then the food, printing cost, and the unexpected the little they make goes to some worthy causes.

do what you have to do but don't consolidate the schools. Memphis schools are a mess and everybody knows it. My high school was Central and look at it now. We were the best now the test scores are pathetic. If Memphis wants to get better then they need to focus on their schools. Its just that simple.

Reginald,

Saw you there snapping pictures. Can't agree more. It was very nice. Did you hear when the Councilman took a jab at the Mayor. If you want my opinion it's better without Willie. All he did was pat himself on the back and then criticize some department head, who would quit the next day.

Where does all the money go from this party? Bet you somebody is getting rich.

Their're still divided down race lines. the whites on one side and the blacks on the other side. This city is in a mess.

Did you read his post? Milton said the money goes to help over 150 nonprofits. Please no conspiracy theory.

Sorry it has been a while since my last post. This is a nice blog and you will get more posts from me, promise. My family, we attended the Pray Breakfast. You were right it was very nice, glad we went. Lowrey had on the tables a sheet listing all the nonprofits that the money was going to support. Reginald, I didn't see your nonprofit on that list! You said you go to his event every year, every time you mention him on this blog you are very supportive, and I know you have spoken publicly in support of him. He's your councilman isn't he and your nonprofit is in his area? Several of those nonprofits aren't even in his district. What gives? Fair weather friend if you ask me.

Eric,

Thanks for the comment, but I'm sure the Councilman has a process for his selection. There are many worthwhile nonprofits that didn't make the list. You can only do so much.
