(WWJB) What Would Jesus Be?

Last week Congressman Steve Cohen appeared on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews and explained his comments on the House Floor where he stated, "Jesus was a community organizer." It was Cohen's attempt, graceful attempt in my view, to respond to the distasteful comments made by Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin at the Republican National Convention.

Both Giuliani and Palin mocked Senator Obama's years as a community organizer all the while the audience of Republicans laughed. I sat and watched this sad spectacle and asked myself, "What would Jesus be if he came back to Earth?"

I have spent the last 15 years of my life as a community organizer. I remember being part of a group that went house to house in 100 plus degree weather to deliver fliers to residents telling them about a refinery that was polluting the air with dangerous chemicals. I remember getting my chain saw after Hurricanes Elvis and joining my friends as we went around the neighborhood helping to clear away downed branches. I recall sitting through hundreds and hundreds of community meetings where average citizens practiced the fundamental right of a democracy and that is the right to peacefully assemble. Everyday community organizers go out among the poor and give of their time and energy to help make the world a little better.

There is no doubt in my mind that if Jesus came back to Earth he would be a community organizer. I and thousands more like me are proud of the work we do. To those Republicans that decided to make fun of our work, let's see who will be laughing after November 4th.

Cohan shouldn't have apologized for what he said. He was right. Next time don't back down!

What did that guy mean when he said Jesus was a carpenter and not a community organizer? What was jesus telling people in his Sermon on the Mount, "Hey remember to cut with the grain of the wood." No, he was organizing and educating the people. You can be a carpenter and a community organizer, duh. Congressman Cohen was right and he should have told that guy off.

It looks like the republicans have gone crazy! Several of my friends are conservatives and they are pissed at McCain.

The hypocrisy of the republicans is sickening. They talk about their love of God as if no one else can love God more. Then they sit there and laugh at someone who does God's Work.

The Lord will punish those who use his name in vain.

As much as we might want to fit our lives into an mode that would be acceptable to Jesus using comparatives, it will not work. I hear you now, there is no church withtout spot or wrinkle. He said He was coming for one, so there must be. Jesus is coming again, and if the spirit of man has not re-connected with its creator in repentance and salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, it will not matter how organized the community is or how community organizing the person is, the future of all will have been set by choice.

Steve Cohen is full of himself. Appologies are fine but black people need jobs. Its a shame we cant find one black person to be congressman.
We need to get our act together.
