Curse You God of Sports!
Coach John Calipari expressed it so well when he said Memphis needs this win. You could feel it in the air. Memphians were a buzz. Everywhere I went I saw BLUE. People were turning to perfect strangers and saying, "Go Tigers!" It was electric.
What makes a great city? Is it big buildings, or major businesses, or huge stadiums? No, it's the people and more importantly it's how the people feel about their city. Memphians have for too long walked around with a dark cloud over their heads. Even as the Tigers advanced you could hear in the shadows people saying, "We can't win." As if this city is cursed. Speaking with one friend who told me that there was no way the Tigers could win, "The god of sports is only playing with us. He won't let us have it. Like the Titans at the 2000 Super Bowl he will bring us to the edge and then snatch it away." I hate this pessimism. I hate it even more when it seems to turns out to be right.
That game was ours... oh, curse you god of sports.
