City Council Chairman Myron Lowery is hosting his 21st Annual Prayer Breakfast and his 18 th Annual Jazz Champagne Brunch on Saturday, December 31, 2011. Both events will be held at the Memphis Airport Hotel and Conference Center at Airways and Democrat.

The guest speaker at the 9 a.m. Prayer Breakfast will be Congressman Steve Cohen and the theme will be “Moving Memphis & Shelby County Forward”. Lowery added, “This theme was selected due to the increased number of jobs that will be created through our economic development efforts, despite the many challenges our city and county faced in 2011.” Memphis Mayor AC Wharton and Shelby County Mayor Mark Lutrell will also be on the program along with Rev. Lester Basken, Pastor Rufus Woods, Rev. Sam Mickens and Apostle Perry Maples. Gospel music will be provided by Fannie Clark and the Tennessee Mass Choir, Blanche Reynolds and Deborah Manning Thomas.

Entertainment at the Jazz Champagne Brunch includes Just Us, Sounds by Marque and CJ the DJ. The Jazz Champagne Brunch begins at 1:30 p.m. and the menu will include barbecue ribs, chicken, collard greens, chitlins, black-eyed peas and champagne. As usual, door prizes will be awarded thanks to the Landers auto dealerships in Collierville and Southhaven and the Memphis Grizzlies.

Open Letter to Chairman Chism

Chairman Chism, Democratic Shelby County Commissioners and SCDP Executive Committee:

Today at 1:30 p.m., you will once again attempt to resolve the redistricting plan for the Shelby County Commission. I have attached two emails from one of your Republican Colleagues, Chris Thomas, to the Suburban Chambers of Commerce and Suburban Mayors. In these emails, Thomas is supporting the 3 member districts which exist now as the best thing for Republicans. I can only assume that the key reason he supports this plan is because he sees and anticipates a power grab in 2014, and it could happen if you allow it.

We all know that Commissioner Mulroy's District, District 5, is the swing district which could go either way. If the Republicans really go after this district with a well-funded moderate Republican, we could be facing a 7-6 Republican majority County Commission. Why would we allow this to happen when the Republicans at the state level and throughout this nation will strengthen their positions for the next 10 years during their redistricting process? Why would we even consider anything which would cripple or weaken us in the future?

Again, this is why the single-member district plan is the best plan for Democrats. With this plan, we are assured of a majority Democratic-controlled County Commission, and we should take advantage of this opportunity. Apparently, you have the two Republican votes which are needed (Roland and Ritz) for something other than the 3 member plan. Please reconsider your support of a plan which we know will better position Republicans and which would likely hurt Democrats in the future.

In what can only be called a landslide Lee Harris defeated his opponent by more than 2:1. Mr. Harris exemplifies the quality of leadership Memphis needs to move forward. This will be important because District 7 not only takes in areas of Downtown and Mud Island it also covers some of the more challenged communities in North Memphis.

As a lifelong community organizer it is my hope, that Councilman-Elect Harris will divide his time equally throughout all of District 7; with what I have seen this will not be a problem for this determined young man.

The only negative was the less than one-percent turnout for this important race. Many voters have tuned out and turned off when it comes to politics. These are the people Mr. Harris must reach out to, "The 99%" who feel they have no voice.

There are many times I'm disappointed in things that happen in this City, but tonight Memphis could do no wrong!

Polls open at 7 a.m. today for the last leg of the City Council District 7 runoff race, with Lee Harris and Kemba Ford in an election both predicted will be a virtual photo-finish.

"If I were a gambler, I wouldn't bet on this race," said Ford spokeswoman Pat Rogers. "It's going to be a nail-biter. It's kind of like the Michael Jackson trial. Everybody's waiting for the verdict to come in."

Harris also predicted a close finish and cast himself as the underdog. "We're up against a name brand, a very prominent political family." But, he said, "If I had to bet I'd bet the folks in District 7 are ready for a change."

Harris' campaign manager, Shelby County Young Democrats chairman Terry Spicer, predicted that Harris, a 33-year-old Yale-educated business law professor at the University of Memphis, will get his strongest support from Mud Island neighbors.

Both candidates live on Mud Island, but Harris easily defeated Ford in that precinct in the Oct. 6 election. Her strongest support in that election was at Dave Wells Community Center, where she got 33.9 percent of the vote, Spicer said. The two runoff candidates defeated 12 others in the municipal election. Eleven of those candidates endorsed Harris in the runoff.

Ford, a 37-year-old former actress, said she left Los Angeles to return to Memphis to offer her assistance after the indictment of her father, state Rep. John Ford, on bribery charges.

The candidates were separated by only four votes in the Oct. 6 election, with Harris first.

Polls close at 7 p.m. with both candidates planning to campaign up until the last minute. Rogers said Ford will be knocking on doors and campaigning at voting precincts before heading for her headquarters at the AFSCME Local 1733 offices. Harris said he will spend the day at Corning Elementary School in Frayser where he plans to vote, then return to his headquarters on Chelsea just east of Hollywood for the vote count.

Chairman Turner Regarding Title X Funding and the Start of the Contract with Christ Community Health Services

MEMPHIS – Shelby County Democratic Party Chairman Van Turner released the following statement regarding the beginning of the contract with Christ Community Health Services (CCHS) for Title X services:

“For over 35 years Planned Parenthood of Greater Memphis (PPGMR) has served the people of Shelby County by providing comprehensive Family Planning Services to families in need. Despite their expertise and years of dedicated service to the community, politics has once again invaded the issue of reproductive health, endangering the future of thousands of people who have come to rely on their services.”

“Starting in February with Republicans in the State Legislature, and continuing with political pressure from Governor Bill Haslam’s Office, the County Administration of Mayor Mark Luttrell and County Commission, Republicans have declared war on Planned Parenthood in a misguided crusade against a procedure not even covered by Title X funds.”

“Ignoring evidence and the requirements of their very own RFP regarding personnel, Mayor Luttrell’s Administration engaged in a bid evaluation process determined to ensure that no Title X funds would flow to the most experienced provider of said services for a purely partisan political purpose.”

“Adding insult to injury, the County Commission, including three Democratic members, voted to affirm the contract with Christ Community Health Services (CCHS), despite mountains of evidence found both in the response to the RFP and public statements made by high ranking officials in the organization that they were either unprepared or unwilling to abide by all the requirements of Title X. This outcome is unacceptable.”

“This week marks the beginning of the contract with CCHS. We hope they will abide by the terms of the contract to the same high standards set by PPGMR, but we are also outraged that our government officials, from the State down to the County level would place the people of this county in a position of relying on hope alone rather than evidence and experience.”

“The stakes of this decision are high. Taking into account the rate of teen sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, infant mortality, and high poverty rates associated with unplanned pregnancies, we feel this decision is irresponsible, tone deaf and reckless considering the challenges facing our community.”

Last week, Mayor Wharton executed a contract with Linx Consulting to develop and de sign a new website for the City of Memphis. Our current website (which can be accessed at MemphisTN.gov ) is clearly outdated in terms of what the public should rightfully expect from a modern, functional, attractive online resource.

Linx Consulting is a local, minority-owned consulting firm that provides technology strategic consulting for non-profits, small- and medium-size businesses, and education institutions. It s partners on the city website project include Launch Memphis, Smart City Consulting, Simple Focus, and MediaCurrent.

But the person they need the most is you .

The first public input session for the new website will be Saturday, October 22 when we hold our city's first "GovCamp" at BRIDGES. Governments across the country have been making data sets open and available to all citizens, and we'd like to bring that trend to Memphis. So what does that mean to you? What are some cool things the City of Memphis and its citizens can do with all this information? Finding those answers is the point of GovCamp. City officials will present data that could be made available. Then, citizens will have their chance to apply that data in open and innovative ways.

Memphis City Council to Appoint Interim Council Member to Represent Council District 7

The Memphis City Council will select a new member to fill the vacant District 7 position on Friday, July 22nd at 8:00 a.m. There are fourteen individuals vying for the position. The process will begin with each candidate giving a brief introduction and reason for wanting the seat. The Council will then hold a round where each member will have an opportunity to nominate his or her choice to fill the seat. The second round will commence with members voting on nominees submitted during the first round. With each successive round of voting, the person who voted first in the previous round will vote last. Beginning with the second round of voting, a nominee receiving less than two votes will be dropped from the list of nominees. After three rounds of voting, the Chairman may accept a motion to consider the top two vote-getters. The Chairman will have the discretion to establish time limits for voting.

When a new member is selected, the swearing in ceremony will occur immediately following the Council meeting.

Hurley to Cover Costs of Desk Repair

Tennessee House Speaker Beth Harwell expects the freshman representative who carved her initials into a legislative desk to pay for the repairs.

“In the excitement of being a freshman at the end of session, Republican Representative (Julia) Hurley etched her initials into her desk,” the speaker said in an emailed statement to TNReport. “As with any state property, we will take action to have the desk restored, and I’m sure Representative Hurley will be more than happy to compensate the state to make the repairs.”

Hurley, a first-year lawmaker from Lenoir City, admitted to the Knoxville News Sentinel this week she scratched her initials “J C H” into her desk that sits on the chamber floor of the House of Representatives.

She blamed the minor vandalism on fatigue shortly before the Legislature adjourned for the year.

(CNSNews.com) – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) said the “entire agenda” of the Republican-controlled House is to defeat Barack Obama in 2012 even if they “take down” the U.S. economy in the process.

At a Capitol Hill press conference on Thursday, Cohen said, “The fact that all these states came up with these laws at the same time was not spontaneous generation, it was Rovian,” referring to state voter ID laws requiring individuals to present photo identification before casting a ballot in an election. (“Rovian” refers to Republican strategist Karl Rove.)

“This was an obvious Republican attempt to hurt our vote in 2012 and to hurt the President of the United States’ chances of reelection, which is the entire agenda of the Republican House, is to defeat Barack Obama even if they take down the United States economy while they do it,” said Cohen.

According to the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, which was represented at the news conference, 16 states now have laws “requiring” or “requesting” voters to present photo ID in order to cast a ballot: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin. Hawaii has a Democratic governor and Rhode Island’s governor is Independent.

Other Democratic members of Congress at the news conference included Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) and Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.).

A Republican friend of mine said the other day, "Palin is killing us!" I could not agree more. Sarah Palin is the wild card for the Republican Party and the Ace-in-the-Hole for Democrats. As she crisscross around the Country in her "One Nation" tour bus Palin is overshadowing her fellow Republican Presidential hopefuls. The question is why? Is it to whip up the base? Maybe it's as Palin said, "To make sure that people are aware of the good things in America." Exactly how this bus tour is going to accomplish this I'm not sure, and I would bet neither is she.

What is happening is that sincere Republicans that really want, like the rest of us, to have a safe, prosperous country are being used by fear mongers and charlatans. Even though I agree with some of the issues and concerns espoused by Republicans, I could never support them as a political party due to the fact that they have allowed right-wing extremist, neo-fascist and opportunist to hijack their Party. Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and even their darling Mike Huckabee, who was too busy building his $3 million dollar home in Florida to run for President, are using these Republicans for their own personal gain.

No, Palin is good for Democrats. She has no intention of running for President of the United States. That would mean she would have to give up her lucrative position as a commentator for Fox News. Palin will hang around long enough to fill her PAC with millions of dollars from her gullible supporters, stroke her enormous ego, and do enough damage to help President Obama clinch a second term. Thanks Sarah.

If you have or know kids between the ages of 18-31 with a high school
diploma, the Federal Aviation Association is taking applications for
air traffic controller school. We all have kids and know kids in the
right age group (under 31) and with some effort they could reach a
salary of over $100,000 with benefits in about 3 years! You need only
a high school diploma to apply and credit is given for college on the
exam.

Fill out the application immediately - even if they don't know if
they'd want to attend immediately - it's the federal government and it
may take them months to call. The key is to apply NOW... There will be
a lot of retirements coming up rather quickly and they need to line up

FAA rarely has an open application such as this and that the jobs are
coveted.

This is a great opportunity and it should be noted that choosing a
site like Anchorage or Indianapolis to train is a likely acceptance
into the training program - after which you can transfer anywhere in
the country that has a tower. I hope you pass this information on to
family & friends.

Do You Still Believe Memphis?

Like many of you my heart sank as the clock ticked down on our chance to advance to the Western Conference NBA finals, but maybe not for the same reason. As a community organizer I spend a great deal of my time, some would say too much time, on social issues. My life's work is all about trying to make Memphis a better place to live. I saw the success of the Grizzlies as an opportunity to bring Memphians together and that is just what happened. I had the surprising pleasure of sitting next to former Mayor Herenton at one of the Grizzlies' home games, as his eyes gazed around the FedEx Forum he said, "This is why I enjoy coming to these games. It is one of the most diverse crowds you'll find any where. You have young and old, rich and poor, black and white. This IS Memphis." I couldn't agree more.

As my friends will contest I was a Grizz fan long before it became the thing to be. Walking around the city in my well worn Grizzlies' cap I would see "Believe Memphis!" signs all over, I'm welcomed with "Go Grizz!" by strangers and you better know what Z-Bo means if you're going to hold any respectable conversation.

The Grizzlies have exceeded pundits expectations, taken down more noted teams and silenced the naysayers. Far more importantly they gave a city, that all too often focuses on its differences, a reason to come together. I've witnessed over these past few months the raw power Memphians have and a spirit that could bring you to tears.

Throughout their incredible run the Grizzlies have called on us to "Believe." It's a slogan that goes far deeper than a basketball game.

Even though in game seven against the Thunders our dreams of going to the finals were dashed this time, I say don't put away those "Believe Memphis" shirts, signs and towels. Let this be a spark to greater things. Don't lose the hope, don't slide back into the self-loathing that holds this city back. I for one still Believe!

The students and faculty of Booker T. Washington are truly inspirational, as evidenced by the tremendous support during the online voting during the Commencement Challenge. The faculty worked diligently to ensure that students have access to a wide range of classes which help ensure the students stay motivated so they can be successful in school and life. Van Turner Wins Second Term

In nothing short of an overwhelming show of support, the Shelby County Democratic Party (SCDP) has re-elected chairman Van Turner to a second two-year term of office. Amidst rumors that an opposition candidate such as the recently elected County Commissioner Justin Ford would run against the well respected chair, Mr. Turner aggressively campaign for support. This campaigning not only deterred any likely opposition, it strengthened his base and was the catalyst for changing the face of the Party’s Executive Committee.

The number of SCDP Executive Committee members is based on the voting history of Democrats in Shelby County. Due to purging of Democratic voters by Republicans and a lackluster turnout of voters during the 2010 Tennessee Governors’ race the allowable number of SCDP Executive Committee members dropped from 83 to 38. Many long time members of the Party lost their seats.

For the past two years the SCDP has struggled due to an entrenched opposition group that neither supported Mr. Turner nor were willing to work to move the Party forward. They rejected countless attempts by the chair to find common ground. Most, if not all, of these individuals lost their seats.

This smaller more homogeneous Executive Committee now has the opportunity to make sweeping changes to the Party. Chairman Turner needs to take advantage of this brief period to address such concerns as funding for the Party, ineffective committees and the Party’s ability to vet qualified Democratic candidates for future races.

Though many in the Party are celebrating the oustering of some opposition members they would be wise to remember the words of Lyndon Johnson, "Better to have them inside the tent pissing out than outside pissing in.” The next two years will be very interesting.

The other day it was stated that our Congressman Steve Cohen compared Republicans, who lie about health care, to Nazis. Now the Congressman is being attacked for breaking the "Peace Agreement" between the Parties. First off when you have a political party where its neo-conservatives are considered moderates you can forget about civility. Secondly, I carefully listened to Cohen's speech and that was not what he was saying. What he was speaking about was the power of propaganda and fear mongering, which is exactly what the Republicans have been doing.

The shooting in Arizona may or may not have been motivated by right-wing hate speech, but it would be difficult to argue that xenophobic rhetoric denouncing our President as a non-American, placing targets over elected officials pictures, and using comments like, "Taking Back Our Country" does create an atmosphere where the weak minded could be lead to violent acts.

One news station stated that the two Parties should be more civil and that those that are right would prevail. The problem with this is that the last election showed that right doesn’t always win. If anything the last election showed that if you have nothing to offer simply attack your opponent with lies and you will win. Republicans were and are more than prepared to do everything in their power to prevent President Obama from successfully improving the state of this nation.
Nazis? Maybe not, but “Peace in our time.” Don’t you believe it.

In a sold out game the Memphis Grizzlies took down the mighty L.A. Lakers in one of the best games I've seen this year. As I entered the stadium I was surrounded by Laker fans. A couple of people even made fun of my Grizzlies' cap. One person said, "You here to see them get beat by 30 points?" Of course the sad thing is that I wasn't at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, but right here at the FedEx Forum and those weren't people from L.A. but from Memphis.

Now of course people have the right to support whatever team they choose, but it breaks my heart to see Memphians down their own team. Do they not realize that this is one of the only professional teams we have in this city? I realize that other cities do the same thing but we can't afford that luxury.

Come on Memphis show some hometown pride!

The new Republican majority that will take over the U.S. House of Representatives in January is already sowing the seeds of an overreach. According to The Washington Post, "the first major bill to be considered when the new Congress convenes in January will be one that would cut federal agency spending by $100 billion." After that, the incoming House majority leader has vowed to have a vote every week on legislation to cut federal spending, but won't elaborate on what is on the chopping block.

Tea party candidates who campaigned on extreme agendas are certain to oppose raising the debt ceiling, which could result in another disastrous federal government shutdown and a default on our obligations that could cause another global financial crisis.

It would be a mistake if the only lesson Democrats take away from the 2010 midterm elections is that they should defend the status quo. We lost a historic number of seats on a wave of anger over the struggling economy. But it would be a bigger mistake to drastically roll back federal initiatives that Americans are relying on during these tough economic times.

Republicans have already said they will oppose extending unemployment benefits unless Democrats agree to $6 billion a month in spending cuts -- abandoning more than 2 million Americans who will struggle to survive if critical jobless benefits aren't extended. These Americans are the Purple Hearts of the recession and should be one of our priorities, along with those who need Medicaid assistance, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits or insurance coverage under COBRA. Respected economists agree that helping such Americans with timely, targeted, temporary assistance will stimulate the economy and provide a social safety net to those most in need.

The federal debt, as well as current economic challenges, demands that both parties come together to form a long-term plan to improve our nation's financial well-being. We should temporarily extend the Bush tax cuts to the 98 percent of Americans who represent the middle class and who generate the spending upon which our economy depends. We should renew the estate tax at its present level and rate -- a move that won't grow the deficit. Many newly elected tea party members are already proposing to eliminate the estate tax altogether and extend the Bush tax cuts to millionaires, a terrible idea that will greatly increase the deficit.

President Barack Obama has appointed a bipartisan blue-ribbon panel to make recommendations on how to improve our nation's fiscal position. Doing so is vital to our long-term economic health and will ensure that Social Security and Medicare survive for future generations.

I'm convinced we can get the country back on the right fiscal path if we work together, and we can start by supporting programs that work and cutting those that do not. We must keep teachers in the classroom, police officers on the beat, and firefighters on the ready. These essential jobs were preserved by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and continue to need federal support.

According to the Center for American Progress, we could eliminate all nondefense, nonentitlement spending and still have a $1 trillion deficit. That means that we must join together to restore our fiscal health in a way in which everyone contributes.

U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., is incorrect in stating that the federal budget can be balanced by cutting discretionary spending while excluding the Department of Defense and other sacred cows from any cuts. The numbers just don't add up. Approximately $1.1 trillion of the $2 trillion federal budget is discretionary spending. More than half the discretionary budget is made up of nearly $700 billion in defense spending.

When looking to balance a budget and reduce deficits, one must look at all discretionary spending -- including defense. While we all want to ensure that our country has a strong military, there is unquestionable waste in the defense budget and weapons programs that exist solely for the benefit of contractors -- not the country or our national security.

It is a certainty that the new majority in the 112th Congress will be tested on their ability to stabilize and improve the economy. I have a good working relationship with Republicans in Washington and see us working well together on the Surface Transportation Authorization Act, the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization, and my Aerotropolis Act for the benefit of Memphis. As a minority member, I will do everything in my power to fight for a strong budget that is good for the 9th District and our nation.

Republican State Rep. Curry Todd

While discussing a state-funded children’s insurance program at a Fiscal Review Committee meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, Republican state Rep. Curry Todd, likened undocumented immigrants to rats.

“They can go out there like rats and multiply then, I guess” Todd mumbled in to a microphone. His comment was in response to the state’s CoverKids program that provides free health coverage to children under the age 18 was not verifying the immigration statuses of pregnant women.

In the Nazi propaganda film, "The Eternal Jew" the Nazis justified their inhuman actions against the Jewish people by comparing them to a hoard of rats. Now I'm not calling Rep. Todd a Nazi or that he is a racist. In fact, I feel all too often opposition groups are quick to label someone as a means to shut them up. What I am saying is that we are moving into a time where there will be major cut backs in social service funding and some may find this process easier if they can see these people as not being human. In short, I feel Todd's comment is part of the Republican's Final Solution of the poor.

As the founder and executive director of a nonprofit agency that provides support to foster children and families in crisis I have a good understanding of our limited role. When President George W. Bush back in 2001 proposed and implemented the Faith Base and Community Initiatives under the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services I expressed concern that this had nothing to do with "compassionate conservatism," but in fact was a gradual means of getting government out of the social service business.

In my view nonprofits are here to be a patch where the government's safety net has come unraveled. We were never designed to be the safety net. By turning responsibility over to nonprofits Bush was insuring that Republicans could then turn around and cut funding to these nonprofits. This way it's the nonprofits that are failing and not the government; protecting the jobs of these elected GOP's (or SOB's if you want the truth.)

Already you are hearing about cut backs in social services. Why? Because the poor and disenfranchised do not vote, so they do not count. So let's call them rats, or welfare queens, or freeloaders - just as long as we don't see them as human beings.

These were all critical races with tremendous implications on the future of our city and our state. My message to them was very clear: Memphis is on a path to success in rebuilding our economy, improving our schools, and curbing the problems of blight, poverty, and crime... but the support of our allies in Nashville and Washington, D.C. is absolutely vital.

In the past year, I have worked hard to foster a new spirit of civility, collaboration, and cohesion in Memphis City Government. Although the campaign to forge a new metropolitan government here was unsuccessful, I am committed to working with Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell and his staff to make our governments more efficient, to develop a more competitive job-creation plan, and to improve the quality of life for this entire region. Last night was not a victory for Republicans; it was a victory for gridlock, it was a victory for fear-mongering, it was a victory for narrow-mindedness, it was a victory for those who want to turn back the hands of time.

The Republicans drove this nation to the edge of an abyss and then threw the keys to Obama. After the President has pulled us back from the brink, turned us around and is now prepared to move us forward – they want the keys back. Regrettably there are many with short memories that are willing to return to corporate greed and poor oversight. When will they learn?

Republican Senator Mitch McConnell summarized the goal of his party by saying, “The single most important thing is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” He didn’t say the single most important things is healthcare, or housing, or jobs, or the environment, or education, not even poverty. When confronted on how to solve the ills of our nation the Republicans, like parrots, squawk out the same words over and over: less taxes and less government.

The main issue I have with Republicans is that they preach about democracy but have no understanding of the meaning of the word. It is all about taking back “their country.” They chastise those elected officials who dare to work to find common ground. They speak in terms of absolutes. The truth is Democracy is about compromise and spreading power.

No, last night had little to do with Republicans charting a new direction, but a great deal to do with America loosing its direction.

Wells Fargo bank in celebration of it's acquisition of Wachovia bank is hosting a "Community Event" on TUESDAY, October 19th at 7:30am-9:00am at the Memphis Botanical Gardens at 750 Cherry Road Memphis, TN. At this event WELLS FARGO will grant $48,000 to local nonprofit organizations in a shallow attempt to buy the goodwill of the people of Memphis as well as whitewash their actions in our community.

Join us Tuesday as we come to collect the $60,000 in back taxes, and unpaid fines and fees owed by WELLS FARGO to our community. This money is owed on 45 properties that they own or have foreclosed on, leaving families on the streets, and communities plagued by blight. If WELLS FARGO wants to have the good will of the people of Memphis and Shelby county then they must earn it by responsible and ethical actions not by hiding behind the good works of local non-profits.

You already know that over the past ten months the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center has been hard at work in researching the root causes and connections between social ills such as homelessness, blight, fires, home foreclosure and how these problems intersect and manifest in our communities. In this process we have observed how the predatory behavior of banks and lending institution like WELLS FARGO does not end with the distribution of sub-prime loans in African American neighborhoods, nor does it end with families put out on the streets via home foreclosure. These unethical actions extend further as vacant properties owned by banks are being left as open sores in all our neighborhoods. In addition all over our country there is a massive tide of cases with errors, forgeries, bogus documents to outright fraud in the foreclosure process. As of today Attorney General's offices from all 50 states have launched probes into these foreclosure irregularities and many banks and states have enacted a moratorium on foreclosures. WELLS FARGO has refused to halt foreclosures for this review.

Here in Memphis many bank owned properties in low income areas are unmaintained, unsecured and uncared for and become magnets for vermin, trash, fires and crime. To make matters worse many of these bank owned properties have years of unpaid back taxes and unpaid code fines. So not only are the the people of Memphis victimized by predatory lending and high rates of home foreclosure, but adding insult to injury WE ALL PAY for the results of predatory lending and lax management of bank owned property and pay higher taxes from increased fires, grass mowing, demolition costs and homeless services costs to cover for their lack of responsible action.

Wharton to Host Virtual Town Hall

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. will host a three-way virtual town hall meeting Wednesday that links City Hall to citizens in Cordova and Hickory Hill.

The 6 p.m. session will focus on the city’s budget and school funding. Wharton and his administration are working on a list of options for the Memphis City Council to consider to come up with $57 million in funding two courts have ordered the city to pay the Memphis City Schools system.

Wharton and his division directors will be at City Hall. Citizens will gather at Bert Ferguson Community Center at 8505 Trinity Road in Cordova and Hickory Hill Community Center at 3910 Ridgeway Road. The three groups will be linked by computer.

Congressman Cohen’s NEWBORN Act Passes the House

September 22nd, 2010

The House of Representatives has approved legislation Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) authored to combat infant mortality. The NEWBORN Act would address the growing problem of infant mortality through a national pilot program to promote pre-natal care, community outreach and youth education.

“Memphis has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the country,” said Congressman Cohen, who spoke on the House floor. “The infant mortality rate of a nation is an important indicator of that nation’s overall health. It is an issue that sweeps from urban to rural communities across our country. We must do more to make sure women have the resources they need to deliver healthy babies.”

The Nationally Enhancing the Wellbeing of Babies through Outreach and Research Now (NEWBORN) Act (H.R. 3470) would create a national pilot program in cities with the highest rates of infant mortality that focuses on providing pre-natal care and community outreach, and educating at-risk and potential mothers about pregnancy and infant mortality. Statistics will be gathered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help lead to a better understanding of infant mortality.

The United States ranks 30th in the world in infant mortality incidents and, while there are many causes for infant mortality, the lack of access to quality, affordable and comprehensive healthcare is a significant part of the problem. In 2005, 68.6 percent of all infant deaths occurred to preterm infants, up from 65.6 percent in 2000.

The infant mortality rate in Tennessee’s 9th district is the highest in the U.S. and five times the national average at 6.86 deaths per 1,000 live births. In 2005, one Memphis ZIP code had an infant mortality rate that was deadlier for babies than the countries of Vietnam, Iran and El Salvador.

Steve Cohen's JFK Moment

Fifty years ago today I took a photo of Senator John F. Kennedy visiting Memphis. Vice President Richard Nixon was also in Memphis that day -- the only time both men were in the same location at the same time during the 1960 Presidential campaign.

In the photo -- which hangs in my Congressional office in Washington -- you see JFK seated on a moving car smiling and waiving at the crowd. In the background is the historic Union Avenue Methodist Church located on the corner of Union Avenue and Cooper Street, which has been the subject of a heritage/zoning issue. Then Governor Buford Ellington is seated in the car with JFK.

I was 11 years old when I took this photo and it has served as an inspiration to me over the years. It is vital that young people are inspired to dream and to achieve and that is why I have invited President Obama to visit us in Memphis next year. A Presidential visit would be a great inspiration to Memphis’ children and working families.

An Open Letter to Conservatives

Dear Conservative Americans,

The years have not been kind to you. I grew up in a profoundly Republican home, so I can remember when you wore a very different face than the one we see now. You've lost me and you've lost most of America. Because I believe having responsible choices is important to democracy, I'd like to give you some advice and an invitation.

First, the invitation: Come back to us.

Now the advice. You're going to have to come up with a platform that isn't built on a foundation of cowardice: fear of people with colors, religions, cultures and sex lives that differ from your own; fear of reform in banking, health care, energy; fantasy fears of America being transformed into an Islamic nation, into social/commun/fasc-ism, into a disarmed populace put in internment camps; and more. But you have work to do even before you take on that task.

Your party -- the GOP -- and the conservative end of the American political spectrum have become irresponsible and irrational. Worse, it's tolerating, promoting and celebrating prejudice and hatred. Let me provide some examples -- by no means an exhaustive list -- of where the Right as gotten itself stuck in a swamp of hypocrisy, hyperbole, historical inaccuracy and hatred.

If you're going to regain your stature as a party of rational, responsible people, you'll have to start by draining this swamp:

Hypocrisy

You can't flip out -- and threaten impeachment - when Dems use a parliamentary procedure (deem and pass) that you used repeatedly (more than 35 times in just one session and more than 100 times in all!), that's centuries old and which the courts have supported. Especially when your leaders admit it all.

You can't vote and scream against the stimulus package and then take credit for the good it's done in your own district (happily handing out enormous checks representing money that you voted against, is especially ugly) -- 114 of you (at last count) did just that -- and it's even worse when you secretly beg for more.

You can't fight against your own ideas just because the Dem president endorses your proposal.

You can't call for a pay-as-you-go policy, and then vote against your own ideas.

Are they "unlawful enemy combatants" or are they "prisoners of war" at Gitmo? You can't have it both ways.

You can't carry on about the evils of government spending when your family has accepted more than a quarter-million dollars in government handouts.

You can't refuse to go to a scheduled meeting, to which you were invited, and then blame the Dems because they didn't meet with you.

You can't rail against using teleprompters while using teleprompters. Repeatedly.

You can't rail against the bank bailouts when you supported them as they were happening.

You can't be for immigration reform, then against it .

You can't enjoy socialized medicine while condemning it.

You can't flip out when the black president puts his feet on the presidential desk when you were silent about white presidents doing the same. Bush. Ford.

You can't complain that the president hasn't closed Gitmo yet when you've campaigned to keep Gitmo open.

You can't flip out when the black president bows to foreign dignitaries, as appropriate for their culture, when you were silent when the white presidents did the same. Bush. Nixon. Ike. You didn't even make a peep when Bush held hands and kissed leaders of countries that are not on "kissing terms" with the US.

You can't complain that the undies bomber was read his Miranda rights under Obama when the shoe bomber was read his Miranda rights under Bush and you remained silent. (And, no, Newt -- the shoe bomber was not a US citizen either, so there is no difference.)

You can't attack the Dem president for not personally* publicly condemning a terrorist event for 72 hours when you said nothing about the Rep president waiting 6 days in an eerily similar incident (and, even then, he didn't issue any condemnation). *Obama administration did the day of the event.

You can't throw a hissy fit, sound alarms and cry that Obama freed Gitmo prisoners who later helped plan the Christmas Day undie bombing, when -- in fact -- only one former Gitmo detainee, released by Dick Cheney and George W. Bush, helped to plan the failed attack.

You can't condemn blaming the Republican president for an attempted terror attack on his watch, then blame the Dem president for an attempted terror attack on his.

You can't mount a boycott against singers who say they're ashamed of the president for starting a war, but remain silent when another singer says he's ashamed of the president and falsely calls him a Maoist who makes him want to throw up and says he ought to be in jail.

You can't cry that the health care bill is too long, then cry that it's too short.

You can't support the individual mandate for health insurance, then call it unconstitutional when Dems propose it and campaign against your own ideas.

You can't demand television coverage, then whine about it when you get it. Repeatedly.

You can't praise criminal trials in US courts for terror suspects under a Rep president, then call it "treasonous" under a Dem president.

You can't propose ideas to create jobs, and then work against them when the Dems put your ideas in a bill.

You can't be both pro-choice and anti-choice.

You can't damn someone for failing to pay $900 in taxes when you've paid nearly $20,000 in IRS fines.

You can't condemn criticizing the president when US troops are in harms way, then attack the president when US troops are in harms way , the only difference being the president's party affiliation (and, by the way, armed conflict does NOT remove our right and our duty as Americans to speak up).

You can't be both for cap-and-trade policy and against it.

You can't vote to block debate on a bill, then bemoan the lack of 'open debate'.

If you push anti-gay legislation and make anti-gay speeches, you should probably take a pass on having gay sex, regardless of whether it's 2004 or 2010. This is true, too, if you're taking GOP money and giving anti-gay rants on CNN. Taking right-wing money and GOP favors to write anti-gay stories for news sites while working as a gay prostitute, doubles down on both the hypocrisy and the prostitution. This is especially true if you claim your anti-gay stand is God's stand, too.

When you chair the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children, you can't send sexy emails to 16-year-old boys (illegal anyway, but you made it hypocritical as well).

You can't criticize Dems for not doing something you didn't do while you held power over the past 16 years, especially when the Dems have done more in one year than you did in 16.

You can't decry "name calling" when you've been the most consistent and outrageous at it. And the most vile.

You can't spend more than 40 years hating, cutting and trying to kill Medicare, and then pretend to be the defenders of Medicare

You can't praise the Congressional Budget Office when it's analysis produces numbers that fit your political agenda, then claim it's unreliable when it comes up with numbers that don't.

You can't vote for X under a Republican president, then vote against X under a Democratic president. Either you support X or you don't. And it makes it worse when you change your position merely for the sake obstructionism.

You can't call a reconciliation out of bounds when you used it repeatedly.

You can't spend taxpayer money on ads against spending taxpayer money.

You can't condemn individual health insurance mandates in a Dem bill, when the mandates were your idea.

You can't demand everyone listen to the generals when they say what fits your agenda, and then ignore them when they don't.

You can't whine that it's unfair when people accuse you of exploiting racism for political gain, when your party's former leader admits you've been doing it for decades.

You can't portray yourself as fighting terrorists when you openly and passionately support terrorists.

You can't complain about a lack of bipartisanship when you've routinely obstructed for the sake of political gain -- threatening to filibuster at least 100 pieces of legislation in one session, far more than any other since the procedural tactic was invented -- and admitted it. Some admissions are unintentional, others are made proudly. This is especially true when the bill is the result of decades of compromise between the two parties and is filled with your own ideas.

You can't question the loyalty of Department of Justice lawyers when you didn't object when your own Republican president appointed them.

You can't preach and try to legislate "Family Values" when you: take nude hot tub dips with teenagers (and pay them hush money); cheat on your wife with a secret lover and lie about it to the world; cheat with a staffer's wife (and pay them off with a new job); pay hookers for sex while wearing a diaper and cheating on your wife; or just enjoying an old fashioned non-kinky cheating on your wife; try to have gay sex in a public toilet; authorize the rape of children in Iraqi prisons to coerce their parents into providing information; seek, look at or have sex with children; replace a guy who cheats on his wife with a guy who cheats on his pregnant wife with his wife's mother;

Hyperbole

You really need to disassociate with those among you who:

* assert that people making a quarter-million dollars a year can barely make ends meet or that $1 million "isn't a lot of money";
* say that "Comrade" Obama is a "Bolshevik" who is "taking cues from Lenin";
* ignore the many times your buddies use a term that offends you and complain only when a Dem says it;
* liken political opponents to murderers, rapists, and "this Muslim guy" that "offed his wife's head" or call then "un-American";
* say Obama "wants his plan to fail...so that he can make the case for bank nationalization and vindicate his dream of a socialist economy";
* equate putting the good of the people ahead of your personal fortunes with terrorism;
* smear an entire major religion with the actions of a few fanatics;
* say that the president wants to "annihilate us";
* compare health care reform with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, a Bolshevik plot the attack on 9/11,or reviving the ghosts of communist dictators (update: it's also not Armageddon);
* equate our disease-fighting stem cell research with "what the Nazis did";
* call a bill passed by the majority of both houses of Congress, by members of Congress each elected by a majority in their districts, an unconscionable abuse of power, a violation of the presidential oath or "the end of representative government";
* shout "baby killer" at a member of Congress on the floor of the House, especially one who so fought against abortion rights that he nearly killed health care reform (in fact, a little decorum, a little respect for our national institutions and the people and the values they represent, would be refreshing -- cut out the shouting, the swearing and the obscenities);
* prove your machismo by claiming your going to "crash a party" to which you're officially invited;
* claim that Obama is pushing America's "submission to Shariah";
* question the patriotism of people upholding cherished American values and the rule of law;
* claim the president is making us less safe without a hint of evidence;
* call a majority vote the "tyranny of the minority," even if you meant to call it tyranny of the majority -- it's democracy, not tyranny;
* call the president's support of a criminal trial for a terror suspect "treasonous" (especially when you supported the same thing when the president shared your party);
* call the Pope the anti-Christ;
* assert that the constitutionally mandated census is an attempt to enslave us;
* accuse opponents of being backed by Arab slave-drivers or of being drunk and suicidal;
* equate family planning with eugenics or Nazism;
* accuse the president of changing the missile defense program's logo to match his campaign logo and reflect what you say is his secret Muslim identity;
* accuse political opponents of being totalitarians, socialists, communists, fascists, Marxists; terrorist sympathizers, McCarthy-like, Nazis or drug pushers; and
* advocate a traitorous act like secession, violent revolution , military coup or civil war (just so we're clear: sedition is a bad thing).

History

If you're going to use words like socialism, communism and fascism, you must have at least a basic understanding of what those words mean (hint: they're NOT synonymous!)

You can't cut a leading Founding Father out the history books because you've decided you don't like his ideas.

You cant repeatedly assert that the president refuses to say the word "terrorism" or say we're at war with terror when we have an awful lot of videotape showing him repeatedly assailing terrorism and using those exact words.

If you're going to invoke the names of historical figures, it does not serve you well to whitewash them. Especially this one.

You can't just pretend historical events didn't happen in an effort to make a political opponent look dishonest or to make your side look better. Especially these events. (And, no, repeating it doesn't make it better.)

You can't say things that are simply and demonstrably false: health care reform will not push people out of their private insurance and into a government-run program ; health care reform (which contains a good many of your ideas and very few from the Left) is a long way from "socialist utopia"; health care reform is not "reparations"; nor does health care reform create "death panels".

Hatred

You have to condemn those among you who:

* call members of Congress n*gger and f*ggot;
* elected leaders who say "I'm a proud racist";
* state that America has been built by white people;
* say that poor people are poor because they're rotten people, call them "parasitic garbage" or say they shouldn't be allowed to vote;
* call women bitches and prostitutes just because you don't like their politics ( re - pea -ted - ly );
* assert that the women who are serving our nation in uniform are hookers;
* mock and celebrate the death of a grandmother because you disagree with her son's politics;
* declare that those who disagree with you are shown by that disagreement to be not just "Marxist radicals" but also monsters and a deadly disease killing the nation (this would fit in the hyperbole and history categories, too);
* joke about blindness;
* advocate euthanizing the wife of your political opponent;
* taunt people with incurable, life-threatening diseases -- especially if you do it on a syndicated broadcast;
* equate gay love with bestiality -- involving horses or dogs or turtles or ducks -- or polygamy, child molestation, pedophilia;
* casually assume that only white males look "like a real American";
* assert presidential power to authorize torture, torture a child by having his testicles crushed in front of his parents to get them to talk, order the massacre of a civilian village and launch a nuclear attack without the consent of Congress;
* attack children whose mothers have died;
* call people racists without producing a shred of evidence that they've said or done something that would even smell like racism -- same for invoking racially charged "dog whistle" words (repeatedly);
* condemn the one thing that every major religion agrees on;
* complain that we no longer employ the tactics we once used to disenfranchise millions of Americans because of their race;
* blame the victims of natural disasters and terrorist attacks for their suffering and losses;
* celebrate violence , joke about violence, prepare for violence or use violent imagery, "fun" political violence, hints of violence, threats of violence (this one is rather explicit), suggestions of violence or actual violence (and, really, suggesting anal rape with a hot piece of metal is beyond the pale); and
* incite insurrection telling people to get their guns ready for a "bloody battle" with the president of the United States.

Oh, and I'm not alone: One of your most respected and decorated leaders agrees with me.

So, dear conservatives, get to work. Drain the swamp of the conspiracy nuts, the bald-faced liars undeterred by demonstrable facts, the overt hypocrisy and the hatred. Then offer us a calm, responsible, grownup agenda based on your values and your vision for America. We may or may not agree with your values and vision, but we'll certainly welcome you back to the American mainstream with open arms. We need you.

(Anticipating your initial response: No there is nothing that even comes close to this level of wingnuttery on the American Left.)

It's pesto time...basil is ready to harvest now, but it will certainly continue to produce for the next few weeks. If you grew your own this year, whatever you do, don't let it go to waste. Cut it back now to harvest the leaves. Or, you can purchase cut basil from several MFM vendors. Soon after harvesting, toss the leaves in your blender or food processor with garlic, nuts (pine nuts, "Delta" pecans or almonds), parmesan cheese, olive oil, salt and pepper... zip, zip and you've made yourself some pesto. Freeze the prepared pesto in ice cube trays. Once frozen, place the cubes in freezer bags and they will last for months. When you are ready to use it, pull out a couple of cubes and defrost, add to cooked pasta for a nice side dish or rub on chicken breast before grilling...de-lish!

In one form or another, the post-election protest seems likely to continue.

There's no fat lady singing yet.

Although voting in the 2010 countywide election ended on August 5th and the Election Commission was scheduled to meet for the purpose of certifying the results August 19th, events of the intervening two weeks have made it clear that the results of the election are far from being universally accepted and may yet be formally challenged.
After a hearing in the courtroom of Chancellor Walter Evans on Monday, in which Chancery Court clerk and master Dewun R. Settle was appointed a de facto referee to resolve continuing disputes, Shelby County Democratic chairman Van Turner was asked his opinion about the then pending certification process on Thursday.

"We'll make a decision prior to then about a formal request that they not certify, after that they still have five days to contest the election, and none of this prevents us from going to federal court and pursuing any federal actions that we may deem necessary," said Turner, who, wearing his lawyer's hat, represents litigants dissatisfied with either the results or the election process itself, or both.

The two litigants of record are current county trustee Regina Morrison Newman, a Democrat who is about to lose her job when and if the election results are certified and her election opponent, Republican David Lenoir, is sworn in, and Minerva Johnican, the onetime Criminal Court clerk who was out-polled by the GOP's Kevin Key. Both Newman and Johnican trailed their opponents by fewer than 5,300 votes, which Democrats say is the number of potentially inconvenienced voters because of an Election Day voting-machine glitch.

That glitch (reputedly the result of an error by a long-term civil-service employee, though his or her identity has not yet been revealed by Election Commission authorities) came from the fact that early-voting data from a previous election — reportedly the May countywide primaries of this year — was fed into the electronic voter roll for the August 5th election.

As a consequence of that mistake, a significant number of voters were challenged when they arrived to vote on August 5th. The exact number has not been determined, but in a series of protest meetings convened under Democratic auspices, other complaints have been raised by a variety of other alleged irregularities.

At a previous hearing in Chancellor Evans' courtroom, the litigants and representatives of the Election Commission reached voluntary agreement about the need for sharing information about the actual voting results. But disagreements arose when a group representing the litigants, joined by consultants from BlackBoxVoting, an advocacy group, arrived to download election results last Thursday at the Election Commission's Operations Center at Shelby Farms.

Monday's hearing represented an effort to get beyond the stalemate — based in part on what John Ryder, an attorney for the Election Commission, said were proprietary matters involving the Diebold Corporation, makers of the voting machines in use in the county.

Ryder expressed satisfaction in the appointment of Settle to adjudicate disputes and pointed out that a variety of audits are expected — from two local firms and the state election coordinator — and that both the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Justice have been called in.
Meanwhile, some of the material in dispute has been handed over, though Newman is disturbed that parts of it have been redacted. And of the voters potentially disadvantaged by the Election Day glitch, she said, "Based on our analysis of those numbers, there's a disproportionate number of African Americans and 'others' in that number."

Given that questions were raised about vote counting in the 2006 county election, in which several Democrats were narrowly defeated, questions may linger about the authenticity of this year's outcome, even after all the evidence is sifted.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Turner hinted that the question of outright fraud was not the central issue, however. "We just want to make sure the process is fair and transparent," he said.

(August 10, 2010)— Recognizing that the recent weather-related moratoriums and high energy usage this summer could result in higher bills for MLGW customers, the utility is taking steps to assist customers by expanding bill payment options. From now until September 17, MLGW will lower the dollar limit of money owed to qualify for its deferred payment plan from $500 to $225. During this time, MLGW will also relax the minimum initial payment required to get into the deferred payment plan to 25 percent of the outstanding balance owed or $225, whichever is less. In addition, MLGW is offering to change a residential customer’s bill due date to match up with their social security, disability, government assistance, or pension checks." The current heat-related moratorium is a matter of customer safety, and we will continue with this policy as long as the temperatures remain high,” said MLGW President and CEO Jerry Collins Jr. “In addition, we want to be flexible with our customers in terms of their payment options, and these changes will allow more customers to find a payment solution that works for them.” Per its heat-related moratorium, MLGW will not cut off customers if the forecast heat index will be 100 degrees Fahrenheit or above at any time during a 24-hour period. For customers 60 years of ago or older, physically challenged, or customers certified as life-support dependent, MLGW will not perform cut-offs if the forecast heat index will be 95 degrees Fahrenheit or above at any time in a 24-hour period. Finally, as the heat wave continues, MLGW field employees are knocking on doors and checking on our customers. When employees find unsafe situations due to the heat, we are working quickly to help those customers. MLGW employees will always carry proper identification and do not ask for or accept money for
residential customer accounts. Customers should ask to see identification badges in addition to looking for the MLGW logo on the uniform and the vehicle. To verify an MLGW work request or employee, call (901) 544-MLGW.

..."Chairman Turner has not controlled the Party and had no real knowledge of what a consolidated campaign was like. The co-chairs were amatuerish and relied on an ineffective "ballot" and attending meaningless events."

I do not agree with your assessment of Chairman Turner’s effort or skills. Van reminds me of President Obama. They both stepped into a difficult situation and instead of pointing a finger they put out a hand welcoming any and all who wanted to work together and get the job done. The fact is that there are some who don’t want to work together; they are bitter, divisive and ineffective.

Lexie Carter said it so well this morning on "Eyes on Memphis" when she alluded to the fact that it is time the Party aired it's dirty laundry and start addressing the problem. That problem, in my view, is dead weight in the Party. I stepped down as SCDP Secretary, as I stated, to deal with some family issues and my campaign, but I also became tired of what I saw. Sitting elevated, up front, and facing the members gave me a unique view. What I saw at every meeting were faces of people who were constantly angry, and bitter. I just got sick of it.

As a Community Organizer I spend my life trying to make the lives of others better. By doing so I find inner peace and joy. I can’t imagine spending my time backstabbing and spewing venom. There are some who can’t wait to tear into their fellow human being. Who would never let an opportunity to belittle someone pass him or her by. It has nothing to do with saving the Party or helping the average citizen improve their lives, it’s about self. To these people if you don’t want to help, if you aren’t happy with the leadership that has been working so hard to move us forward why don’t you just leave?

Van made countless calls for help from the members, only a few came forward. If you were one of the few thank you. If you did not step forward I’m forced to ask why? Why join a political party and not productively participate? Now I know that some members were busy actively working for a particular candidate. That I understand but still some time could have been found to lend a hand. No one person can save this Party. If it was not for Van I fear our situation would be far worse.

I am proud to be a Democrat and I am proud of our Chairman Van Turner.

That’s my view, what’s yours.

What Happened?

Let me state that an investigation of the election process has been instituted.

There is no nice way to put this… Last Thursday night Democrats got their butts kicked. Democrats lost race after race to Republicans.

These are people who have political names that are deeply rooted in Memphis history: Ford, Wilbun, and Johnican. These are skilled professionals: Wade, Newman, and Maclin. These are respected community leaders: Thompson, Dixon and Becton. How could they have all lost?

What occurred was what is called the perfect storm. Basically it was different elements coming together to create a major event. These elements were:
1. Strong Republican turn out,
2. White Democrats crossing over to vote for Republican candidates,
3. A low number of black Democrats voting.

Now that I have told you what happened I will now share with you why I think it did happen.

Strong Republican turn out…
Herenton decision to enter the race against Cohen was suppose to make this the “Battle of the Century.” Many Democratic candidates where hoping this would electrify the base and insure a heavy turn out. They were partly correct. Herenton’s entry did turn out the base – the Republican base. Resentment by whites and an opportunity to give our former mayor his first defeat motivated many Willie enemies to vote.
The Republican have been working very hard. For them the 2010 elections are the testing ground for the 2012 Presidential Race. If this is an example of what’s to come, we Democrats need to get our act together and fast.

White Democrat cross over…
Local Republicans have been toning down their rhetoric and have brazenly campaigned in what would have been considered strong Democratic areas. SCDP Chair Van Turner said, “We are at a crossroads in this community. The Democratic Party is the only political organization in this community which actually forces you to walk the walk when it comes to racial solidarity and unity. The Democratic Party is the only political organization in this county which by the very definition of its core values and principles, invites the Midtown or East Memphis suburbanite white voter to vote for a Whitehaven or Orange Mound inner city black candidate and visa versa. You are not merely allowed to talk a good game, but we ask you to walk the walk by putting your vote where you say you mind, heart and beliefs are. In other words, we put principles into practice.”

The Party put out a slogan “We all win if you vote for all TEN” the ten being the candidates above plus Steve Mulroy.

This was a real test of how committed the white Democratic base was to the Party. Would whites vote for an overwhelmingly black slate? SCDP is going to have to do more to win the trust and support of whites. At the same time there are some whites that have a problem with black control and they are just going to have to get over it. There is clear racial tension and mistrust within the Party must be addressed.

Low Black turn out…
We can blame white democrats who didn’t vote for black democratic candidates, we can blame lack of support from key candidates, we can blame problems with the voting system, heck we can even blame the heat – but in the end low turn out of black Democratic voters has to be addressed. I started ringing the alarm right after the Primary when over 80 percent of registered voters in my area failed to vote.

What I’m hearing is that many of these voters don’t know what to do. This City has been a political machine for so long voters are accustomed to being told who to vote for. Since the election of Herenton back in 1991 the machine system has been on life support and many will agree it has died. Personally I’m happy to hear this because for a political machine to work, voters can’t be free thinkers. Now there are some who are trying to make the Party the new machine where it will select which Democrats will run for office. I’m vehemently opposed to this.

I have contacted Van Turner and have expressed the need for the Party to focus on voter education, not so much voter registration, but truly working to civically involve the public. Say what you will about the Tea Party, but you have to give it to them when it comes to motivating the base. Going out with the sole purpose of registering people to vote does not insure they will. If we educate voters and engage them in the process not only will they vote but also make better choices.

Well that’s my opinion, what’s yours?

The other night I attended the Germantown Performing Arts Theater to listen to Joan Baez, the folks singer of the 60's, perform.

Her performance was excellent. Her singing was strong and moving. Joan was part of the 1960's Civil Rights movement. She marched with Dr. King and protested side-by-side with migrant farm laborers.

The theater was packed. After three encores we finished with the entire audience singing Amazing Grace. Fortunately my tin ear for singing was masked by everyone else.

What I found interesting is throughout the concert Joan alluded to her liberal stance on issues from immigration to war; the audience looked upper income, in their late 50's or older applauded in agreement.

At the end of the performance as I walked to my car I noticed quite a few bumper stickers with McCain/Palin and even a few Tea Party references. So who are these people? Are that failed hippies or just wannabes?

Have the idealist of the 60's really become the Party of "No"? This reminds me of a conversation I had two months ago. I was contacted by a gentleman I've known for several years. We both sat on the same nonprofit board. He is a white male in his 60's. He is a hardline conservative and proud of it. Well he came by my office and wanted to talk about the upcoming election. He seemed worried. The conversation went something like this...

"Mr. Doe": Reginald I want you to consider voting for Charlotte Bergmann for the 9th District race.

Me: Isn't she a Republican?

"Mr. Doe": Yea, but we can't let Steve Cohen back in office.

Me: You do know I'm a Democrat?

"Mr. Doe": Yea I know.

Me: You do know I'm an officer of the Shelby County Democratic Party?

"Mr. Doe": Yea I know.

Me: You do know I'm a liberal?

"Mr. Doe": Yea I know, but blacks are going to have to stand up an Charlotte is "black" and she's "articulate."

Me: Articulate black, well that's nice. (He didn't catch the sarcasm.)

"Mr. Doe": All we need is a few blacks to come over to the Republican Party. (Note: He said, "...only a few." I guess a little color is fine but let's not over do it.)

Me: I'm sorry I can't help you. I'm a Democrat.

"Mr. Doe": So was I, right up to the 50's. (Yea, until that Civil Rights stuff started.) I changed because the Democrats wheren't representing me anymore.

Me: Well, I'm sorry but I think I'll stay with my Party.

It seems some people only hear the music and not the words.

SMA Launches Dream Seekers

I'm proud to announce that the nonprofit agency SMA is launching a new initiative to serve young people who are aging out of foster care. One of the most noted foundation in the country dedicated to foster children, the Jim Casey Foundation, has selected SMA to head up their Opportunity PassportTM Initiative.

The Jim Casey Foundation, started by the late Jim Casey - founder of the world's largest package delivery company UPS, select SMA because of its years of service to children in foster care. SMA will utilize the Opportunity PassportTM model that provides these young people with the skill and financial support necessary to successfully transition into adulthood.

The Jim Casey Initiative will be part of the overall work of SMA's Dream Seekers Initiative. On August 13th SMA will introduce this new endeavor to the public. Actress/Author and former foster child Ms. Victoria Rowell will be the keynote speaker. Everyone is invited.

Enough is enough . . . someone is going all throughout this county destroying the campaign signs of our Democratic nominees for county-wide office. This is especially true in the case of Shep Wilbun, the Democratic nominee for the office of Juvenile Court Clerk. All of these candidates spend a lot of time and money investing in these signs. I have personally had to pick-up and repost several of Shep Wilbun’s signs along Winchester heading into Southeast Shelby County for the last two weeks.

This must stop! As an indication of how sick and tired we are of Republicans tearing down the signs of our Democratic nominees, we are offering a CASH reward for any individual who can bring us footage or the license tags of the individuals tearing down the signs of our Democratic nominees. We intend to criminally prosecute these individuals. I cannot wait to find out which insecure Republican candidate is authorizing and paying his or her workers to commit these crimes. I am also asking Chairman Lang Wiseman to request that his Republican candidates and their workers CEASE AND DESIST from tearing down and destroying the campaign signs of our Democratic candidates.

It has come to my attention that the Memphis Democratic Club has released a ballot which makes selections in Democratic primaries and judicial races. I know you have heard this spill several times before but this is not the official Shelby County Democratic Party ballot. The good thing about this ballot is that it has all of our county-wide Democratic candidates listed. It appears, however, that I cannot say this about forthcoming ballots.

While the Ninth Congressional race is heating-up, and that's a good thing for Democrats, it is putting our county-wide candidates in the precarious situation of having to choose between either Cohen or Herenton. This is not fair for our county-wide candidates. All of them deserve to be on both Cohen and Herenton's ballots because they are the Democratic nominees for the these positions.

It would be an injustice to make our county-wide candidates choose between these two powerhouse candidates when they need every vote they can get on August 5. Let's unify and coalesce around our county-wide candidates because we may never get this opportunity again.

TNDP Chair Chip Forrester Calls Luttrell Poll Showing Big Lead ‘Bogus’

MEMPHIS – Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Chip Forrester called a recent poll released by the Mark Luttrell for County Mayor Campaign showing Joe Ford losing by double digits a bogus one meant to instill hope in a doomed campaign.

“Trying to convince African American voters and other Democrats he would be better for them than Joe Ford is ridiculous,” Forrester said of Luttrell. “Mark Luttrell is a hard-core Republican, period. His idea of making our community better is building a bigger jail and privatizing essential government services.

“We do not need a leader like that making decisions about a community’s prosperity. We need someone who understands prosperity depends on good schools, good jobs and good governance. Memphis is full of diversity, and it would be a shame if your next county mayor thought diversity was a bad word.”
Forrester pointed out that President Barack Obama won the county with more than 63 percent of the vote in the November 2008 election, trouncing John McCain by more than 27 points. Luttrell was the county’s co-chairman for the McCain-Palin campaign in 2008, Forrester noted.

Luttrell also chaired U.S. Sen. Bob Corker’s Shelby County campaign in 2006.

“Mr. Luttrell was part of one of the most negative racial campaigns I have ever witnessed,” Forrester said of Corker’s campaign. “Voters in Shelby County will not soon forget that.

“And I can do my own poll showing anything I want by posing the question in a skewed manner. That’s obviously what Luttrell has done in a pathetic attempt to convince voters he is going to win this thing.

“Don’t be fooled by Sheriff Mark Luttrell’s chameleon act. He may come across as friendly to Democrats, but his voting history and his party allegiance reveal his true ultra-conservative ideology. Joe Ford is a proven leader who will work hard to restore funding to the MED and advance progressive ideas like affordable health care,” he added.

About the Show
The latest installment of the hit POLICE WOMEN franchise moves to Memphis to follow four female officers with the Memphis Police Department (MPD). These brave women will juggle intense cop drama and action, all while balancing kids, husbands and life at home.

With a population of over 1 million, Memphis is consistently ranked amongst the most dangerous cities in the United States. the officers of the MPD must be highly skilled and ready for anything.

This is what you will find on TLC website about Memphis and their new show, Police Women of Memphis.

What confuses me is why would city officials give a green light to allow this show to present us in such a negative way? This reminds me of a comment one of my friends from Scottsdale Arizona said about why he would never live in Memphis. His reasoning was that he watched the show 48 Hours and saw the crime in Memphis and concluded we were a crime-ridden cesspool. He saw only the negative of our great city without the benefit of experiencing all the wonderful things that happen everyday; the things that make me proud to be a Memphian.

Many of these shows are more than willing to show Memphis as backwards and dangerous if it improves their ratings. What's worse, we are willing to help.

Save Union Avenue Church

I just returned from a vacation to Charleston, South Carolina. As I walked through their downtown one thing above all else grabbed my attention - all the historic buildings. Many had lost their original use years ago, but instead of demolishing these architectural landmarks they were saved and new uses were found for them. How wise the leaders of Charleston were and are. To lose the connection to your past is to lose the purpose of your future.

Now I return to Memphis where the battle to keep the Union Avenue Methodist Church is growing. The members of the church have plans to move and CVS demolish the building and build a pharmacy. Well I’m all for new businesses but if we turn our communities into strip malls who will remain to patronized these establishments?

There is an effort to create an overarching plan for the area. This has been something I have advocated for several communities including North and South Memphis. All too often we allow development to occur piecemeal; with one project having no connection to the next. We must develop a plan and strategy to where we are trying to go. If we fail to do this we might find ourselves somewhere we don’t like.

I am always being asked to grade Obama's presidency. In place of offering him a grade, I put together a list of his accomplishments thus far. I think you would agree that it is very impressive. His first six months have been even more active than FDRs or LBJs the two standards for such assessments. Yet, there is little media attention given to much of what he has done. Of late, the media is focusing almost exclusively on Obama's critics, without holding them responsible for the uncivil, unconstructive tone of their disagreements or without holding the previous administration responsible for getting us in such a deep hole. The misinformation and venom that now passes for political reporting and civic debate is beyond description.

As such, there is a need to set the record straight. What most impresses me is the fact that Obama has accomplished so much not from a heavy-handed or top-down approach but from a style that has institutionalized efforts to reach across the aisle, encourage vigorous debate, and utilize town halls and panels of experts in the policy-making process. Beyond the accomplishments, the process is good for democracy and our democratic processes have been battered and bruised in recent years.

Let me know if I missed anything in the list (surely I did).

1. Ordered all federal agencies to undertake a study and make recommendations for ways to cut spending
2. Ordered a review of all federal operations to identify and cut wasteful spending and practices
3. Instituted enforcement for equal pay for women
4. Beginning the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq
5. Families of fallen soldiers have expenses covered to be on hand when the body arrives at Dover AFB
6. Ended media blackout on war casualties; reporting full information
7. Ended media blackout on covering the return of fallen soldiers to Dover AFB; the media is now permitted to do so pending adherence to respectful rules and approval of fallen soldier's family
8. The White House and federal government are respecting the Freedom of Information Act
9. Instructed all federal agencies to promote openness and transparency as much as possible
10. Limits on lobbyist's access to the White House

31. Restarted the nuclear nonproliferation talks and building back up the nuclear inspection infrastructure/protocols
32. Reengaged in the treaties/agreements to protect the Antarctic
33. Reengaged in the agreements/talks on global warming and greenhouse gas emissions
34. Visited more countries and met with more world leaders than any president in his first six months in office
35. Successful release of US captain held by Somali pirates; authorized the SEALS to do their job
36. US Navy increasing patrols off Somali coast
37. Attractive tax write-offs for those who buy hybrid automobiles
38. Cash for clunkers program offers vouchers to trade in fuel inefficient, polluting old cars for new cars; stimulated auto sales
39. Announced plans to purchase fuel efficient American-made fleet for the federal government

Funeral arrangements, which are open to the public, have been set for civil rights leader Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks.

Visitation will be from 12-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Greater Middle Baptist Church, 4982 Knight Arnold.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bountiful Blessings Temple of Deliverance Church of God in Christ, 369 G.E. Patterson. He will be buried at Elmwood Cemetery.

Dr. Hooks died early Thursday at Methodist University Hospital. He was 85.

Out of Sight - Out of Mind

Here is an example of the difficulty of wanting to be a public official. You are required to look at an issue from both sides, be fair and try to compromise. Which means people will see you as being on the opposite side, not fair and uncompromising.

Take my good friend "Ernie" who has invited me to the Rally for H.O.P.E. (Homelessness Organizing for Power and Equality). It will be Thursday, May 13th from 3-5 p.m. in front of City Hall. This rally is a protest against the Center City Commission's sponsored legislation that has gone to the City Council to create a "No-Panhandling Zone" within the Downtown core.

Ernie's argument is that these laws start off targeting only the most aggressive panhandling but soon becomes a tool to harass the homeless and drive them away. Once away, out of sight out of mind. He points out that Memphis has no free shelter for the homeless and that many have mental, medical and substance abuse problems.

I agree with Ernie. We have turned our jails into mental institutions. This action will push many of these individuals in to communities that are unable to address these problems.

As a community organizer I've seen how government policies can be less about solving a problem and more about moving the problem so as not to be embarrassed or inconvenienced. This type of action only intensifies and indigent the issue.

I also have another friend by the name of "Bert". He works for the Center City Commission and sees the issue from those who are negatively impacted by panhandlers who harass visitors and customers; who relieve themselves outside; and general are a nuisance.

I also operate a business, a community laundromat. The constant problem of vagrants standing outside the establishment begging for money, and using the restrooms to bathe runs away customers and cost the business thousands of dollars in lost revenue annually.

As County Commissioner I will work closely with community based efforts to find solutions to long standing problems. Often this requires working outside the box and being willing to take chances.

The issue with those for and against the panhandlers ordinance is that they are both correct. We can not simple ship our problems to other communities and we can not ignore the negative impact these problems have on our businesses.

Often it is necessary to push for short term answers while working on long term solutions. Protecting our Downtown businesses is a must, but Memphis must increase the number of shelters and rehab centers. We must focus on prevention and ask the questions: Why? Why is there a homeless problem? What? What are effective methods being used to improve the quality of life for these citizens? How much? Are we prepared to pay the short term costs of addressing the homeless in our city or are will willing to fact the long term cost of ignoring this problem.

When the May 4th Primary for County Commission is over and I will know if the voters have decided to give me a chance to represent them. It will be important to listen to all sides and work to find common ground. I am not saying this will be easy, but anything worth while rarely is.

Wells Fargo

Today at City Hall, we are announcing the filing of an amended complaint in the federal lawsuit against Wells Fargo for unfair and unscrupulous mortgage lending practices in Memphis and Shelby County.
The amended complaint adds important new information revealed by the City and County’s investigation:
First, the amended complaint highlights the testimony of four former Wells Fargo employees who worked in Memphis. In sworn statements, they describe how the company targeted African Americans for predatory, deceptive, subprime loans; deliberately added expensive and unnecessary loan terms to increase the profit for Wells Fargo; looked for minority borrowers with expensive existing consumer loans and consolidated this debt with new debt, securing it against the borrowers’ homes, thus placing the house at risk where it had not been at risk before; and deceived borrowers by concealing terms and falsifying documents.
Second, the amended complaint documents the property-by-property damages the City and County have incurred as a result of the unnecessary foreclosures in African-American neighborhoods. Foreclosures lead to code violations that cost the City and County money. Many foreclosed properties become vacant. Vacant properties also result in code violations that cost the City and County money.
The amended complaint sets out the types of costs, such as police and fire calls to the properties, as well as services the City and County have had to provide, like boarding, cleaning, structural repairs, and demolition.
Finally, the amended complaint adds new claims under the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act based on the testimony of former Memphis Wells Fargo employees who describe the deceptive practices that have been targeted at African-American neighborhoods and borrowers. A copy of the amended complaint has been provided to Attorney General Cooper and that office is currently reviewing the matter.
Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. “This new evidence confirms everything we feared about what Wells Fargo has done to our city. We are more determined than ever to see that these deceptive and unscrupulous lending practices that have damaged our families and neighborhoods are addressed. All who have a stake in ensuring our city and county survive the current foreclosure crisis, including our state government and federal regulators, have an obligation to rally around this lawsuit and see to it that Wells Fargo does the right thing.”
The City of Memphis and Shelby County Government are represented by Washington-based law firm Relman, Dane & Colfax PLLC and Memphis based firm Brewer & Barlow PLC.
A press conference will be held at 11:15 a.m. in the Hall of Mayors (125 North Main Street, 1st Floor) to provide more details and answer questions about the amended suit.

Residents of east Memphis serviced by City contractor, All Star Waste Systems, will receive garbage and recycling collection on Friday; however, there will be little or no collection of excess trash and yard debris on Friday, since City crews will be observing the Good Friday holiday.
