If there is one event I will not miss it has to be Myron Lowery's Prayer Breakfast. What a wonderful way to start the year by joining your fellow Memphians to ring in the New Year with inspirational songs, hopeful blessings for our great City of Memphis and thought provoking words from local leaders. Yes this is one celebration you do not want to miss!
The Prayer Breakfast will be held January 1, 2009 at the Airport Holiday Inn Select, 2240 Democrat Rd. starting at 9:00 a.m. Tickets are priced at $50 per person or $500 for a table of ten. If breakfast is a little too early for you there will also be a New Year's Day Jazz Champagne Brunch later that afternoon. Donations from these events will go to support over 150 nonprofit organizations.
The guest speaker at the 9 a.m. Prayer Breakfast will be Congressman Steve Cohen and the theme will be “A New Year With Hope and Promise”. Lowery added, “This theme was selected because of my optimistism for the future despite the many challenges our city faced in 2008.” As usual many local civic, community and religious leaders will participate in this event including Rev. Orlester Johnson, Rev. S.H. Mickens and Apostle Perry Maples. Gospel music will be provided by the Lake Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Deborah Manning Thomas and Myosha Wright.
Entertainment at the 15th Annual Jazz Champagne Brunch includes Earl Randle, The Peacemakers and the jazz group Intermission. The Jazz Champagne Brunch begins at 1:30 p.m. and will also be held at the Airport Holiday Inn Select. The menu will include barbecue ribs, chicken, collard greens, chitlins, black-eyed peas and champagne. As usual, door prizes will be awarded and everyone will receive a special gift.
